MATCH PREVIEW | Southport

After a truly woeful start to the season for Port, Jim Bentley was announced as their new manager the day after Chorley’s 0-2 victory at Haig Avenue on August 28. It has been another tough season for Southport, having finished eighteenth last season and currently sitting nineteenth as they make their way to Victory Park this afternoon. But could fortunes have turned for Jim Bentley’s side?

With Brackley Town leading the at Haig Avenue going into the closing minutes of the contest last weekend, not many Port fans could have foresaw the sequence of events that would see the game turn on its head and give them a much needed three points. Harry Flowers got the home side on the way with a headed goal from a corner before Josh Hmami gave them the lead with the smallest of touches from a cross out wide. It was the icing on the cake – coming in added time – which was most welcome: a timely return for Jordan Archer after a period of absence and a goal to mark it.

For Chorley, there wasn’t long to dwell on their FA Trophy exit to Solihull Moors with the visit of Spennymoor Town on the Tuesday evening. A slow first half saw Chorley fall behind before rescuing the three points in a battling second period. Despite the two clubs respective positions, the Magpies will expect a game full of intrigue today, with a touch of added spice. Beyond the football, this afternoon is about so much more than the ninety minutes as we come together to support Jack and Hannah Sampson.
